Making a referral to the EAP
When an employee’s work performance deteriorates, there are three basic steps that should be taken to motivate the troubled employee.
1. Recognize the problem. Changes in employee’s behavior may be evident as work performance begins to deteriorate. Documenting changes in performance of the employee will help you to be objective when addressing the problem.
2. Address the problem. Remember to focus only on job performance issues with the employee. Refrain from discussing personal issues that may be thought to be the cause of the performance problem. Speak with the employee personally about the concerns, protect the employee’s privacy by maintaining confidentiality, and document the interaction. You may suggest that whatever the cause of the issue, it is important that the employees work performance improve. Remind the employee that your organization has an employee assistance program, and that they may access it to obtain free assistance to deal with a variety of personal problems that may or may not contribute to the issues with their work performance.
3. Re-evaluate job performance. Continue documentation and discussion with the employee about their work performance. Note improvements in performance and offer feedback to assist the employee in meeting your expectations.
