Non-invasive cardiologists

Non-invasive cardiologists have expertise in the detection and treatment of heart disease. They perform tests and evaluate the results to diagnose heart disorders. When heart problems are detected and treated earlier, it can help avoid more serious problems later. A non-invasive cardiologist might recommend lifestyle adjustments or prescribe medications to control a problem. They might also refer a patient to an invasive cardiologist, interventional cardiologist or cardiovascular surgeon – specialists who perform various corrective procedures.

Invasive cardiologists

Invasive cardiologists perform procedures that involve going into the body to correct a problem.

Interventional cardiologists

Interventional cardiology deals with catheter-based treatment of heart disease. Interventional cardiologists do minimally invasive procedures that use a catheter (often inserted through the femoral artery in the thigh) to reach problem areas from the inside. Procedures performed include angioplasty, removing blockages, cardiac ablation and placing stents. Catheter-based procedures are performed in catheterization labs, also known as cath labs.
