ROTATION SCHEDULE

The first six weeks are hospital, pharmacy and technology orientation. Rotations are generally five weeks in length and include required core experiences and elective experiences. Residents also participate in several longitudinal experiences during the year, which contribute to the core experiences of the program.

It is recommended that three core rotations be completed prior to taking elective rotations. Rotations are designed to integrate inpatient and outpatient care, drug use evaluation, drug information, distributive and clinical practice, and student teaching. The amount and type of experience in each area must be negotiated among the clinical specialists, decentralized pharmacists, pharmacy administration, and the resident.

ROTATION GUIDELINES

  • Residents should plan to meet with rotation preceptors for one hour daily (average five hours per week).

CLINICAL STAFF PHARMACIST COVERAGE

  • Each resident will be assigned to clinical staff coverage every third weekend.
  • Each resident will work two holidays
  • The resident will provide sick call replacement for Clinical/Staff Pharmacists (maximum five days per year)
  • Each shift in excess of these requirements will be at the resident's discretion, and the resident will receive per diem compensation above their regular stipend at the clinical staff pharmacist wage.

PRESENTATIONS

  • Each resident will make four formal presentations to a multidisciplinary audience: one on a new drug, two on drug therapy, and one on their research project. A preceptor advisor is required for each presentation.

PROFESSIONAL TRAVEL

  • Each resident will receive full support to attend one national meeting (e.g. ASHP Mid-Year Clinical Meeting or ACCP Spring Practice and Research Forum).
  • Residents will receive full support to attend the Great Lakes Regional Residency Conference to present their research project.

RESEARCH PROJECT

Each resident must complete a project that contributes to the body of knowledge in pharmacy practice. The focus area for your research may have a clinical, administrative or quality improvement focus. Each project must have at least one preceptor advisor.

Project presentation at the Great Lakes Regional Residency Conference is a requirement. As part of this project/presentation the resident may be required to write a proposal or protocol or complete an IRB submission. A final written report of the project is required.
