Free orthopedic consultations help seniors
Is chronic pain a problem? Or perhaps it’s not so easy to get out of the easy chair.
Seniors are invited to partake in complimentary orthopedic consultations by a Ministry Door County Medical Center licensed athletic trainer. Free blood pressure screenings are also available.
The new services, beginning in January 2009, are available by appointment from 11 a.m. to noon on Thursdays at the Door County Senior Resource Center on 14th Ave. in Sturgeon Bay.
Tina Koyen, licensed athletic trainer with the hospital’s Rehab Services Department, will be providing the orthopedic consultations and blood pressure checks. Her aim is to help seniors maintain their health and recognize when it may be time to see a doctor.
Who should think about an orthopedic consultation? Koyen said seniors who are experiencing chronic pain in their knees and shoulders, for example, may benefit.
During an orthopedic consultation, she will give seniors ideas for exercises and other steps they can take to manage their problem. Also, people who concluded physical therapy may get more tips from Koyen at the Senior Center.
“If someone had an orthopedic injury and they want to learn how to continue what they learned in therapy, I can help with that as well,” Koyen said.
“Overall, a consultation will help people prevent injuries and facilitate general health and mobility,” she continued.
Koyen provided orthopedic consultations while she was employed with another health care provider and is pleased to bring her professional services to the Senior Center.
“I thought it would be a good fit here, especially since the hospital is so committed to the community,” she said.
MDCMC, a part of Ministry Health Care, is donating Koyen’s services at the Senior Center. JoAnn Schley, Senior Center coordinator, values the ongoing partnership with the Sturgeon Bay hospital. MDCMC/MHC staff also offer exercise programs, classes and more at the Senior Center.
“The hospital has been very supportive, and we always appreciate more information on health. This is something to help seniors manage pain. And that is wonderful. We are glad to offer it,” Schley said. To make an orthopedic consultation appointment on a Thursday with Koyen, call MDCMC/MHC Rehab Services, 920/746-0410.
