A short walk to the world’s largest penny and Dr. Kate Museum will follow. The museum will remain open until 2:30 p.m.
According to Laurie Oungst, vice president Ministry Howard Young Health Care, “Work on Dr. Kate Memorial Park is nearing completion and we want to provide an opportunity for those who feel a connection to Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb, and the original hospital, to participate in a celebration of its history.”
The original 1952 corner stone and sections of the original brick from the former Lakeland Memorial Hospital were used in the pillars which stand at the entrance of the park.
“Community members have been part of creating what will stand to represent a special time in our community’s history – a reflection of Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb and the community’s efforts to establish Lakeland Memorial Hospital. We value the history of Dr. Kate Pelham Newcomb and wanted to give those who knew her, and worked side by side with her, the opportunity to be part of the celebration, added Oungst.”
