Ministry Health Care’s Howard Young Medical Center laboratory receives national accreditation
Ministry Health Care’s Howard Young Medical Center (HYMC) has been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.
Dr. James Lau, Laboratory Medical Director, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the excellence of the services being provided. HYMC is one of the more than 7,000 CAP-accredited laboratories worldwide. The laboratory provides services to HYMC, Ministry Medical Group Clinic and numerous area physicians, clinics and veterinarian offices year round. The laboratory is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, with outpatient hours of 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on weekends and holidays.
The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, started in the early 1960s, is recognized by the Federal Government as being equal or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program. Laboratory Manager Lisa Michalis-Alft congratulated the many departments she oversees including Secretarial, Phlebotomy, Hematology, Serology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Blood Bank, Urinalysis, Limited Microbiology, and Pathology Services.
During the CAP accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control for the preceding two years. Procedures and policies were also examined. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications as well as the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, in addition to the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients.
The CAP is a medical society serving nearly 17,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world. It is the world’s largest association composed exclusively of board-certified pathologist and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The College is an advocate for high-quality and cost-effective patient care.
