Ministry Health Care Supports Medical College Campus Placement in Wausau

Today’s announcement by the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) of its decision to locate the central Wisconsin medical school campus in Wausau is a positive next step in the effort to address the shortage of physicians in rural Wisconsin.  Wausau was one of three communities in central Wisconsin considered as potential sites for the program and Ministry officials would have been pleased with a commitment to any of these three superb locations.

“As a major provider of health care services in Wisconsin, we recognize the importance of this effort by the Medical College of Wisconsin to establish a medical education program in this part of the state, stated Michael Kryda, MD, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Ministry Health Care. “This program will compliment the already long-established medical education programs within our system as we continue to address the need for additional physicians in the many communities we serve across the state.”

Ministry Health Care supports the decision and will work closely with MCW as it moves forward with plans to build the program. The choice recognizes the importance of greater Wausau to the region as a medical destination and underscores Ministry’s decision several years ago to build a hospital and locate clinic practices here.

At the same time Kryda says the entire region will serve an important role in providing the full clinical experience that each of the medical students will require as part of this program.  Many milestones must be achieved before student recruitment can begin and include accreditation, funding, faculty recruitment and development, formalized agreements with local health care systems and academic institutions, MCW faculty approvals, and the creation of local residency programs.

“More than seventy-five percent of Wisconsin residents who receive both their medical education and residency training in Wisconsin choose to remain in the state,” stated Dr. Kryda. “With a known shortage of physicians, locating this program in the heart of our service area provides a prime opportunity to showcase our personalized approach to patient care.”
