Prenatal Education Classes

The birth of a child is one of the most cherished moments in life. The Birthing Center at Howard Young Medical Center offers several different opportunities for childbirth education. As you prepare for your hospitalization and birth experience, classes can be an important first step. You will learn about baby care basics and tips that will help you as you enter the next phase of parenting. Since some of the classes are limited in size, please register for your classes well before your scheduled due date. Call the Birthing Center at 715.356.8500 for more information or to register. Prenatal Class Series

Each prenatal class series consists of four classes with an optional CPR class. You should attend the series that is scheduled approximately 2 months before your due date. Please register 1 – 2 months in advance of the series you choose to attend.

  • Held Tuesdays, 6:30 – 9 p.m. at Howard Young Medical Center, Classroom 2 and 3
  • Fee: $40 per mother

Class 1: Labor and Delivery – What’s it All About?

What to expect when you are admitted to the hospital, during the course of labor, birth, and the first moments of your baby’s life. Includes discussion of pain management options and a video of a birth.

Class 2: Effective Laboring Skills

Covers coping with labor and delivery: controlled breathing techniques, relaxation and comfort measures and coaching tips. Also covers the “whys” and “hows” of C-sections. Bring a pillow and blanket please.

Class 3: Your Newborn is Here

Includes a discussion of newborn characteristics, newborn stimulation and interaction (infant massage, toys, carriers), the emotions of pregnancy and postpartum, and car seat safety.

Class 4: Breastfeeding – Off to a Great Start!


Family and Friends CPR

This class teaches the skills of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and choking relief for adults, children, and infants. This is not a “certification” class. It is an opportunity to learn and get hands-on skills practice using mannequins. CPR is offered on the Tuesday evening following class four of the prenatal class series. You can register for a CPR class when you sign up for prenatal classes. This class is open to expectant parents, new parents, grandparents, babysitters – anyone who is interested. Pre-registration is REQUIRED, and class sizes are limited. Please register at least 14 days in advance.

  • There is a $15 fee per person (separate from the Childbirth Education Series fee). The class is free for Howard Young Medical Center employees.

Siblings are Important

For children 3 – 12 years of age who are expecting a baby in their family. This is a chance to tour the Birthing Center and view a video “just for them.” Call the Birthing Center at 715.356.8500 to set up an appointment for this special time.

A prenatal exercise and postpartum exercise class. To register call 715.356.8625.
