Pediatric ICU

related information

Ministry Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital is the only medical center in central Wisconsin to offer a specialized intensive care unit exclusively for children. This award-winning, 8-bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is located next to the Pediatric Unit. The Level I PICU provides the highest level of pediatric intensive care to critically injured or seriously ill children and adolescents up to 18 years of age.

The PICU has the region’s only on-staff pediatric intensivists, physicians specially trained to care for critically ill and injured children, who work together with additional specialists from cardiology, trauma, orthopedics, gastroenterology, nephrology, oncology, neurology, and other departments. Specially trained pediatric critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, and additional support staff provide a “high-tech, high touch” level of care.

In the Pediatric ICU, patients include trauma populations, as well as children with a variety of medical/surgical diagnoses.

Some of the specialized equipment used on the PICU includes ventilators, specialized beds and cribs to accommodate patients with special needs, cardio-respiratory monitoring, computer charting and documentation, peritoneal dialysis monitoring and specialized syringe pumps.
