The medical term for a stroke is “cerebrovascular accident” or CVA. It is an injury to the brain that occurs when it does not get enough oxygen and nutrients. Oxygen and nutrients are normally carried to the brain in blood vessels. With a stroke, there is a problem with one or more blood vessels in the brain or leading to the brain.
When a stroke occurs, brain cells die because they cannot get enough of the oxygen and nutrients to that are needed to survive.
