Functional Medicine Weight Loss Approach

What is medical weight loss?

Medical weight loss is not the use of weight loss drugs/diet pills. Medical weight loss is a physician directed program based on the scientific principles of weight management and individualized to a patient's specific needs and health issues. It involves lifestyle changes, nutraceutical supplementation when necessary, guided caloric restriction as needed. This comprehensive program evaluates the root causes of obesity and weight gain in a scientific manner. It takes into account many parameters such as the patient's biometrics {body measurements of fat, visceral fat, skeletal muscle etc.), laboratory evaluations, hormone imbalances, Gl issues food sensitivities and toxicities to achieve and sustain healthy weight in the long term.

What types of treatments are used?

Our program generally involves some type of elimination-add back diet in order to identify foods to which patients are sensitive or allergic. There is typically a liver detox diet, carried out for 1-4 weeks depending on patient parameters, and repeated as needed according to the patient's response to weight loss treatment.

HCG weight loss is a closely monitored, very low calorie diet that allows for substantial weight loss in a short period of time, while maintaining muscle mass. We use various other programs such as Paleo, Ketogenic, Mediterranean, IFM Core diets. Depending on patient parameters these diets and similar programs can be tailored to their needs.

What are the benefits of Medical weight loss?

There are many benefits for conditions such as pre-diabetes and non-insulin dependent diabetes, elevated cholesterol and triglycerides. There can be significant improvement of
energy levels, general health and joint pain. Some patients have decreased need for blood pressure and cholesterol medications. Studies show that improving health in the areas of blood pressure, blood sugar, central obesity and cholesterol can decrease inflammation and the risk of heart disease, stroke. These changes can increase life expectancy and quality of life. Patients with insulin resistance causing hypoglycemia can benefit as well.
