Our Next Speaker on Monday, March 19: Calories Count when Eating Out
It is no secret that as Americans, we love to eat, and we love to eat out. The calories we eat while dining out add up quickly. Just one fast food meal can already put you past your daily amount of calories needed! While fast food establishments provide “healthier options”, are they really healthy, or is it a trick? This week’s presentation will explore fast food menu options to see if they contain any nutritional value, and how their food fits into our dietary guideline recommendations., a helpful nutritional guide set up by the government, will also be used to help us make smart decisions, and is a reliable source on diet. Laura Zelenak, BBA, TLC, IC, the PEP Grant Community Liaison for the Stevens Point Public School District will be our tour guide as she navigates us past the junk, to find more nutritional options when eating out.

After March 19th, you will be able to explore any fast food menu and understand what to look for and what to avoid. Eating out does not have to be a bad thing when you do it in moderation and can choose more nutritional options! Join us for a great presentation. Be there or be square!

Presentation Review: Move It to Lose It: No Time, No Problem

Jackie Meyers, Fitness Instructor from the Stevens Point Area YMCA, gave an interactive talk about how to add physical activity to your daily life. Our bodies are made to move. You can have fun by being creative to burn those extra calories that when added up, makes the difference. Some creative ideas are to walk when waiting for someone or something, fidget, and carry your groceries in one bag at a time. It is important to keep your body guessing. Adding some variety in the activities and keeping them in 10-15 minute bursts can help with this. Strength training is good to add to any program to improve daily living and bone mass. Try turning regular activities into fitness adventures like dancing around the living room while brushing your teeth. You can also try adding short 30-second explosions of high intensity activity while you do moderate activities. Some activities that the audience participated in were laps around the room, wall sits and pushups, triceps dips, and lunges. Do not forget that even when trying to maintain your weight there needs to be a calorie in versus calorie out balance and always remember, “a body at rest tends to stay at rest, but a body in motion tends to stay in motion.”
