Summary

Tuesday Night's Presentations: Why the Weight

Dr. Olga Barchugova answered the question, "Why do I keep gaining weight?" Key points to remember are as follows: the foods we eat must have minimal sugars, fats and additives. Though they make the food taste good, they do not make us look good. Another component that keeps us gaining weight is our lack of sleep; less than six hours a day can cause our weight to increase so put away the iPads, cell phones and shut off the TV and go to sleep early! Some things to keep in mind: weight loss is noticeable after 6 months; don’t rush it! People get so anxious about the number on the scale that they lose focus and give up when they’ve only just began; give it time. An ideal way to stay on track is to set the right goals. Give yourself two to three manageable goals and make them easy to accomplish. For example, don’t have the mindset that your goal is to lose 20 pounds; start with a goal of 3 pounds. You’ll find it is easy to manage losing 3 pounds at a time rather than trying to lose 20 right off the bat. Remember: forgive yourself, don’t just give up!

Wednesday Night's Nutrition Skill Class: Cooking for the Family [Recipes]

Have you ever made soup without adding salt?! Now you can! The ‘Healthy Turkey Chili’ recipe made this week at the nutrition class did not add any salt! The natural flavors were enough to spruce up this dish!

Eat your colors! A dish with a wide variety of natural colors means it’s a healthy choice! Eat up!

Don’t be afraid of poblano chili peppers or their rubbery texture! They don’t pack the punch that a jalapeno pepper does, and they cook up wonderfully!

Listen to music while you cook, and don’t be afraid to bust a move!

Add the ENTIRE stalk of celery to your soup! Including the leaves, they add hidden nutrients to your soup and give it a pretty green color!
