Summary

Tuesday Night’s Presentation: This presentation was cancelled and was rescheduled for January 21st.

Wednesday Night’s Nutrition Skill Class: The Price is Right: Healthy Food-Grocery Store Training @ Copps Food, Stevens Point

There are many different things to consider when grocery shopping. Unit price, buying in bulk, waste, quality, and shelf life are all very important things to consider to help you get the healthiest bang for your buck! The tour of Copps food market was administered by the junior and senior dietetics students at UWSP. They took the participants through the aisles beginning with produce and ending in the frozen foods section.

The focus was on making healthier choices, beginning with small changes and working your way to a newer, healthier lifestyle! The students stressed the importance of reading and comparing nutrition labels. Sodium and sugar were the focus of many of the questions. When comparing labels, it was often found that the generic brands had the same nutritional quality for a cheaper price!

Areas of focus were: seasonal produce, meat, canned goods, cereal, juices, dairy, and frozen foods. Brocolli, cauliflower, carrots and parsnips are all in season right now!
