Individual: Spring is here! Get in to the mood with some spring cleaning. Take the daily bag challenge. How it works is you take a paper bag to a room in your house/apartment, for example- the kitchen, bedroom, office…. Then fill the bag with unwanted items, shorts that don’t fit, pots and pans, books, etc... Then donate your unwanted items to a local charity and really feel the benefits of spring cleaning! Join Dr. Tom Wetter, UWSP Associate Professor in Health Promotion and Wellness, in a presentation on the benefits of running/walking. Tom is a lifelong runner who has run 40 plus marathons and this April it will be his 15th Boston Marathon in a row. Learn how to develop a running or walking program. Become inspired! Tom believes everyone can find their niche in the running/walking world. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and get answers. If you never thought you could be a runner or a walker then this presentation is for you!

Following the presentation, join us for a group run, jog or walk. We will offer four groups that will explore running, walk/jogging, walking and mindful walking. There is a group to fit every fitness level. Learn proper walking and running techniques in your group. BRING YOUR SNEAKERS!

Healthy at Every Size: Dr. Annie Wetter joined us Tuesday night and gave tips to help participants stay on the right track through the end of the Ministry Community Weight Race and beyond. Dr. Wetter is an Associate Dean and Chairperson for the Health Promotion and Human Development program at UW-Stevens Point. One of Dr. Wetter’s most intriguing points was avoid comparing yourself to others, which is harder than it sounds. Everyone is unique and we all need to accept that what works for one person may not work for someone else, and that’s okay! Dr. Wetter also touched on the reasons for overconsumption of food. The concern is not emotional or contextual instances, but rather the daily habitual instances. Begin by making small daily changes. One final tip Dr. Wetter left us with is to trust our bodies. The Health at Every Size (HAES) philosophy deemphasizes the weight loss aspect to most healthy living. It suggests that healthy behaviors may be more important than weight loss. Our bodies can be a reliable source of information to each of us, if we learn to listen. By doing so, we can shift to internally regulated cues and decrease our vulnerability to the many external cues that are out there. One way we can accomplish this is by enjoying indulgences without the guilt and believing we deserve it!

Desserts done right! This week’s nutrition skills cooking class, held at the University food lab, focused on how to incorporate lower calorie desserts into a healthy diet. In the hands-on cooking class, participants went home with a decadent dark chocolate cake, refreshing mixed berries with orange custard sauce, and mouth-watering peanut butter cookies. While classic dessert recipes use copious quantities of fat, sugar, or other high-calorie ingredients, these CWR-friendly recipes use substitutions such as prune puree, fat-free buttermilk, and no-calorie sweetener. Participants learned that treating themselves to a healthier-option dessert from time to time can be a delicious part of reaching their weight loss goals.

Other Health related community events

The American Heart Association invites you to celebrate National Walking Day: Wednesday, April 2, 2014. On this day, Americans are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It's a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to give your family, friends and co-workers a friendly push toward a healthier life.

Non-competitive walk in Stevens Point in June: Walk Wisconsin: Saturday, June 7th. Training for the ¾ marathon started this week!

Dancing for a Reason: Adventure 212 is doing a Dance Event to help the United Way! Join us in this fun way to get moving while supporting a great charity!
