News Release: Ministry Saint Clare's Hospital Marks Five Years of "Health Career Day" in Weston
Nearly 80 students from DC Everest High School got a first-hand experience of potential health care careers as a part of Ministry Saint Clare’s Hospital’s fifth annual Career Day on Thursday, December 15 2011.
Students from the Exploring Health Care, Young Adult Medicine and Medical Terminology classes learned about the latest technology, job responsibilities, working conditions, knowledge and skills needed as well as education and training requirements.
“This event provided an opportunity for our students to share some real world experiences with professionals in a number of departments,” said Rose Matthiae, career counselor at DC Everest. “It goes beyond the normal job shadowing experiences by providing a well-rounded variety of the opportunities available to them in health care as they continue down their career paths.”
Students interacted with staff in the hospitals Inpatient Unit, Emergency Department, Heart Services, Respiratory Therapy and Surgical Departments. Human Resources officials also outlined the many administrative and support opportunities as did representatives from the Rehabilitation Services and Radiation Oncology departments of The Diagnostic & Treatment Center, a service of Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Health Care.
The rotations were designed to showcase the various career opportunities in an effort to help students evaluate how their interests, values, skills and abilities translate into meaningful careers and plans for the future.
“This partnership allows us to showcase these important careers to what we hope are our future workforce,” said Sherri Waid, director of Volunteer Services at Ministry Saint Clare’s.
In the five years of the program, more than 400 students have taken part in the Health Career Day at Ministry Saint Clare’s Hospital.
