The invitations were sent. The stage was set. The crowd was present. Stories were told. It was a special day --a day to commemorate the mission and ministry of Sister Catherine Mary Holker, Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother (SSM). As employees, providers, residents, fellow SSMs, and friends gathered for her retirement celebration, the festive afternoon gave way to touching accounts, heartfelt appreciation, and memorable reflections of a life dedicated to serving others. An aura of gratitude and love permeated the room as those touched by Sister Catherine Mary shared their stories and offered their best-wishes.
Time and again, they spoke of Sister’s “calming presence” in the midst of chaos, crisis, and sorrow. They marveled at the gift of peace she brought to each encounter. They honored the love and care she graciously bestowed on those seeking comfort. And all expressed gratitude that Sister’s departure from her official duties as Director of Spiritual Services does not mean a permanent leave of absence.
Sister Catherine Mary’s recognition continued during a celebratory mass that took place in Saint Elizabeth’s Chapel. The Most Bishop John Quinn and fellow active and retired clergy of the Winona Diocese were present to honor her contributions to Saint Elizabeth’s and the SSM community. Following the mass, Sister Catherine Mary’s greatest retirement wish became the day’s grand finale! In the midst of retirement planning, she had a plan of her own up her sleeve!
In order to fully enjoy her “going out” party, she had one final assignment to attend to -- that being a surprise presentation of the Bishop’s Medal to a very deserving Tom Crowley, president of Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Center. Bishop Quinn granted the special request and awarded the distinguished honor. Both stunned and humbled, Tom graciously accepted the Medal and expressed his thanks and appreciation to Sister Catherine Mary, the staff, providers, church, and communities for their ongoing support and partnership in fulfilling the mission and values of the Sisters.
Yes, it was a grand day -- a day that paid tribute to the devotion of two servants whose lives have left lasting impressions on many.
