Rural Trauma Team Development Course Held at Sacred Heart Hospital in Tomahawk

(Tomahawk, WI) Emergency care for the injured patient is often a challenge in a rural setting. An organized team response improves care in trauma situations. Sacred Heart Hospital staff recently took part in the Rural Trauma Team Development Course, developed by the Rural Trauma Committee of the American College of Surgeons. A primary goal of this course is to improve the quality of care in the community by developing a timely, organized, rational response to the care of the trauma patient and a team approach that addresses the common problems in the initial assessment and stabilization of the injured. The purpose of the course is to increase efficiency of resource utilization and improve the level of care provided to the injured patient in the rural environment.

Ministry Health Care staff who participated in this training included four Physicians, four Paramedics, one Respiratory Therapist and eight Registered Nurses. Course instructors included the Trauma Medical Director from St. Joseph's Hospital Marshfield, a Trauma Surgeon from St. Joseph's Hospital Marshfield and an Emergency Medicine Physician from Park Falls Hospital.  Sacred Heart Hospital is only the second rural hospital in Wisconsin to bring the comprehensive course to its facility.
