Four contractors of Saint Joseph’s Hospital recently received the hospital’s Environmental Stewardship Apple Award for showing commitments to being good stewards of the earth.
Awards were presented to Suda Plumbing, Boson Company Inc., Thomas Electric and House of Heating, all of Marshfield.
Suda Plumbing was selected primarily for recycling copper piping and stainless steel tanks. Boson Company Inc., in the past two years, has recycled metal studs and track from demolition projects, metal shelving and other miscellaneous materials. House of Heating, as well, has recycled large quantities of metals, including sheet metal from air handlers to duct work replacements, as well as tons of galvanized sheet metal. Thomas Electric has also recycled large quantities of materials and metals, including copper wire by the palette load, metal conduit from demolition projects and tons of high grade aluminum.
The recycling efforts of all four contractors have resulted in generating approximately a $1,000 per month income for the hospital, rather than paying to dispose of the materials. These funds are then invested back into the facility. Recycling also saves energy and helps prevent new, raw materials from being used to produce new products.
The Hospital’s Environmental Stewardship Program was formed nearly two years ago to improve the health of the community by learning and applying health care industry best environmental practices.
