MMG Surgeon Performs Region’s First Single Incision Adjustable Gastric Band Surgery
Calvin Selwyn, MD, a surgeon practicing with Ministry Medical Group recently performed the region’s first single incision adjustable gastric band surgery. Using this new technique allowed Dr. Selwyn to make only one incision of approximately 15mm using a SILS Port. Dr. Selwyn has been using this technique for several months for gall bladder surgery but the application of the technique to an adjustable gastric band, is the first time it has been used by a surgeon in the region.
Dr. Selwyn has been practicing surgery with Ministry Medical Group since 2006. He did his medical training at University of Minnesota-School of Medicine, Minneapolis. He completed his residency at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield and then did a surgery fellowship at University of Cincinnati Hospital in Cincinnati and a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery and bariatric surgery. Based in Stevens Point at Saint Michael’s Hospital, Dr. Selwyn also sees patients at Saint Clare’s Hospital in Weston, Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield, and Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rhinelander.
Dr. Selwyn is one of the region’s leading surgeons performing weight loss surgery of all types and his recent application of the single incision procedure is a significant advancement. Previously similar surgical procedures required five incisions in the abdominal area. But with the new approach using only a single incision there is less pain and a faster recovery time for the patient.
