UWSP Women's Basketball Team Shares Foundation's Mission for Spreading Hope
The UW-Stevens Point Women’s Basketball team is slated to play their 2010 Pink Zone ® game against Platteville on February 17, at 7 pm at the Berg Gym at UWSP.
The Pointer Pink Zone ® game will honor women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and to show their support the team will be wearing pink jerseys. The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) started Pink Zone ® in 2007 and in 2009 the campaign reached over 912,000 fans, unified more than 1,600 participating teams and rose over $1.3 million for breast cancer research and awareness.
Last year Saint Michael’s Foundation was awarded $4,900 from the women’s team as part of the WBCA Pink Zone ® initiative. Pink Zone ® is aimed at increasing breast cancer awareness throughout college campuses and their communities.
The Pointer women’s basketball team has been holding silent auctions and other fund raising events throughout the year. This year a gift will be presented to Saint Michael’s Foundation at the February 17 game for Project Embrace which provides comforting blankets to patients undergoing cancer treatments at Saint Michael’s Hospital.
Linda Cook, a breast cancer survivor, initiated the project after she received three special blankets as gifts when she was first diagnosed. She wanted to let other women know they are not alone in their fight against breast cancer.
Caretakers, nurses and friends of cancer survivors are encouraged to attend the Pink Zone ® game and will be recognized along with the survivors at the game. Cancer survivors can RSVP to Kole Vivian at Kvivi859@uwsp.edu before February 10.
