Marshfield Clinic AmeriCorps Recovery Program Applications Available

(Rhinelander and Woodruff, WI)  Ministry Health Care is please to announce Saint Mary’s Hospital in Rhinelander and Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff have been awarded placement of a Marshfield Clinic AmeriCorps Recovery Program member for each location. AmeriCorps, often referred to as a domestic Peace Corps, places individuals who give a year of their life to serve their communities.  Membership applications will be accepted now through May 27, 2009.

To receive an application for placement at Howard Young Medical Center, 240 Maple Street in Woodruff contact Rebecca Morin, Vice President of Patient Care Services, telephone 715-356-8061.  Applications received by the host sites after Wednesday, May 27, 2009 will not be considered.  Individuals selected for the Marshfield Clinic AmeriCorps Recovery Program must be able to begin on June 29, 2009.

Marshfield Clinic AmeriCorps Recovery Program places members with host sites throughout the State of Wisconsin to help “Get Things Done”. Members provide one year of service to assist the host sites in building capacity focused on several different health priorities including but not limited to: access to primary care and preventive health services, adequate nutrition, environmental and occupational health hazards, tobacco and more. The ultimate goal of this program is to strengthen the capacity of the host sites and assist them with their volunteer management.

Duties for program members selected will include one of the eleven health priorities identified in Wisconsin Health Plan, Healthiest Wisconsin 2010: 1) Access To Primary And Preventive Health Services, 2)Adequate And Appropriate Nutrition, 3) Alcohol And Other Substance Use And Addiction, 4) Environmental And Other Occupational Health Hazards, 5) Existing, Emerging And Re-Emerging Communicable Diseases, 6) High Risk Sexual Behavior, 7) Intentional And Unintentional Injuries And Violence, 8) Mental Health And Violence, 9) Overweight, Obesity And Lack Of Physical Activity, 10) Social And Economic Factors That Influence Health and 11) Tobacco Use And Exposure. The preferred candidate will have good communication skills, be a critical thinker, organized, self motivated and the ability to work with various age groups. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and access to a dependable vehicle.  

Applicants for AmeriCorps member positions must be willing to serve for 12 months (1700 hours minimum), averaging approximately 35-40 hours a week. Also, members must be able to handle the financial commitment made by accepting an assignment. Applicants must be 21 years of age by July 2009, possess a high school diploma or GED/HSED and agree to a criminal background check and Division of Motor Vehicles check.

Members receive a living allowance of approximately $438 every two weeks over their term of service, along with free basic medical healthcare insurance, free service gear, free childcare (if qualified) and vacation time. Upon completion of the term of service, members receive a $4,725 educational award. Educational awards can be used for loan repayment, future schooling costs and special educational opportunities. Members have the option of serving for up to two terms (24 months) and earning almost $10,000 in educational awards. Members have up to seven years to utilize educational awards.

Marshfield Clinic AmeriCorps Recovery Program members are overseen by host site supervisors and provided with regular support and direction from the Marshfield Clinic AmeriCorps program manager.

Events for the 2009-2010 program year will include a member orientation, program kickoff, midterm training, end of year celebration and more.
