How to Find a Doctor
There are several things to consider when looking for a new doctor.
Location is usually important. Do you prefer to visit a doctor near your home or near your job? Maybe you want to find a clinic near your child's school. You may also want to talk to the doctor's staff before making a choice. Ask a few questions, such as, "How long does it usually take to get an appointment?" and "Who will I see if my chosen doctor is temporarily unavailable?"
In addition, you will want to know which hospital(s) the doctor is affiliated with. Are these hospitals conveniently located near you? Do these hospitals offer the services you or your family require?
Consider a doctor's specialty carefully. A Family Practice physician can treat all of your general health care needs. However, if you have a particular health need, you may want to consider visiting a more specialized physician. Parents may want to consider a Pediatrician to care for their children, a woman may require an OB/GYN to treat specific women's health issues, and someone with Diabetes may want to see an Internist. It is not unusual for different family members to see different doctors.
You will also want to consider a doctor's training. Board Certified professionals have had additional training in a particular area of medicine. Some physicians also have a special interest in treating specific conditions.
Finally, how long has a doctor been practicing medicine? Some patients prefer a doctor with many years of experience. Others appreciate the recent training of a younger professional.
